Dental Cleanings An Overview

Dental cleanings are the foundation of pediatric dental care. Routine visits and professional cleanings can help protect a growing smile from tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can affect children and teens at any time in their life. These visits are the foundation of disease prevention, patient education and the establishment of lifelong healthy habits.

We recommend that you bring your child in for their first visit when the primary teeth begin erupting, or by your child’s first birthday. A first dental cleaning may consist of carefully swabbing the surface of any newly erupted teeth and screening for any early oral health-related concerns. Dr. Miller will discuss your child’s oral habits, diet and any other factors affecting their oral development. We want to get to know your child and work with you to help them enjoy a healthy smile that will support their overall health and well-being.

The dental cleaning performed in our office is a thorough removal of plaque and tartar that is on any surface in the mouth. Our team looks for early signs of developing oral disease and educates both parents and patients on how to keep their smile clean between visits.

Dental Cleanings What to Expect

We understand that some young patients feel nervous or anxious about their dental cleaning. When they sit in our chair, we take the time to talk with them about their interests and hobbies. Dr. Miller and our team also offer age-appropriate information about their dental treatment to help them feel more confident when they visit.

Prior to their cleaning, we have patients brush teeth with a colored disclosing rinse that sticks to plaque, making it visible. This is our opportunity to demonstrate proper toothbrushing techniques and teach patients how to remove as much plaque and bacteria as possible from the teeth and gums.

A dental cleaning should cause little to no discomfort and we make every effort to talk to your child throughout to make sure they are not anxious. We provide fun sunglasses, flavored toothpaste to choose from and a prize at the end to look forward to. Our patients can sit back, relax and enjoy watching their favorite TV show while we clean their smile.

A fluoride toothpaste should be used from the start, placed on a soft-bristled brush.
